Our Functional Academic and Learning Skills Evaluation allows us to identify underlying processing skills that are causing or contributing to your child’s learning challenges. When we determine the contributing factors then we can figure out what interventions will be most effective at remediating the problems.
We use a variety of assessments, including diagnostic, standardized, screening, and structured observation, to identify and measure various aspects of a student’s learning abilities.
To establish a good starting point for understanding our client’s needs we begin with a detailed intake questionnaire, consisting of developmental and academic information. We also include a Learning and Language questionnaire check list for parents and teachers to identify challenges in the classroom and at home. Prior testing will be reviewed on a case by case basis
Each assessment is customized to fit the needs of the client and may take up to three hours to complete. Our standardized tests are designed to see how the brain receives, processes, stores, and retrieves information. Areas evaluated include the neurology of learning, processing skills, communication skills, executive functioning (life management), and academics. We also screen for dyslexia when indicated.
Through our Functional Academic and Learning Skills Evaluation we are able to create a unique learning profile, which identifies both the strengths and weaknesses of our clients. We don’t want to waste your time or money guessing what programs will be effective with your child. With the information we gain from our assessment we are able to identify goals and design a program that will meet your child’s needs and remediate the weak skills.
Why does my child have to be re-tested by your center, can’t we use test results from the school or other professionals?
Many of our clients have come to us with a list of professionals seen and assessments they have already done. We understand that sometimes it feels redundant to just have your child tested again. We never want to over-test a student, but we do need to spend time with your child in order to see what the challenges actually look like.
For this reason an assessment is required for admission to any Hands On Learning Solutions program.
We are happy to review any records or reports that you have as a part of the assessment process. This may allow us to do less testing with your child, but will actually take about the same amount of time for us.
