Many parents tell us that their child started to come home from school saying that they were no
longer smart or could not read. Once the student is convinced they are not smart or cannot do the

If a child needs increased motivation to complete an academic task, the task may not be as easy as it
appears to everyone else. Often a weak underlying processing skill or ability will undermine the child’s
attempts to be successful. Over time, a student will find the effort they put forth and the
disappointment from being unsuccessful becomes too painful to continue. They may appear lazy and
unmotivated, as they avoid the academic task.

One of the most important things we want our children to have
when they graduate from school is a good self image. Without
self-esteem, it does not matter if a child can read or write, they
will not be successful because they will not believe in themselves.
