Phonology and Phonological Awareness: Students learn to break single words or syllables into
individual sounds, or phonemes. The student is then taught to use these sounds and blend them into
words. They will be able to change, delete, and compare sounds in their heads.
Sound-Symbol Association: We cover which sounds are represented by which letters. We then teach
how to blend the letters into words, and how to segment whole words into individual sounds.
Syllable Instruction: We teach the six basic syllable types. When students are familiar with the types
of syllables, they understand what sound the vowels make.
Morphology: The student’s ability to comprehend and spell unfamiliar words is developed through
teaching base words, roots prefixes, and suffixes.
Syntax and Semantics: We cover how word sequence and function are used to give meaning in a
sentence. Grammar and the mechanics of language are used.
Simultaneous and multisensory strategies. To help a student learn most efficiently the Smartplus for
Dyslexia program uses visual, auditory, and kinesthetic channels simultaneously. This program follows
the logical order of language, using a systematic and cumulative method. Included are regular reviews
to strengthen memory.
The Smartplus program includes both synthetic and analytic instruction. Dyslexic students must be
taught both how to take the individual letters or sounds and put them together to form a word
(synthetic), as well as how to look at a long word and break it into smaller pieces (analytic). It is
necessary to teach both synthetic and analytic phonics all the time.
Through direct instruction, we ensure that all concepts are learned, as many people who struggle
with dyslexia are not able to learn through inferential learning. We use prescriptive, individualized
programs and continuous assessment of the student’s needs in order to help the student learn
automaticity.
Program, activity, and symptom descriptions are for educational/informational purposes only. Any recommendations
given are not to be considered diagnosis, medical, or psychological prescriptions. Every parent needs to assume the
responsibility for their own child and make their own decisions as to the techniques and methodologies that will
best fit their child's needs.
