"My son had been
taking Adderall for
over six years. We had
tried to take him off of
the medication before,
but he was so hyper
and unfocused we
would put him back on.
After completing
programs at HOLS,
including the Focus
Coaching, my son has
successfully stopped
taking Adderall. He is
able to focus and
control his
hyperactivity when
doing his school work!
We are so excited!"

Program, activity, and symptom descriptions are for educational/informational purposes only. Any recommendations
given are not to be considered diagnosis, medical, or psychological prescriptions. Every parent needs to assume the
responsibility for their own child and make their own decisions as to the techniques and methodologies that will
best fit their child's needs.
We have a variety of techniques that we can use, based on the age and ability of
the client. With these techniques, the student is able to see and feel what it’s
like and what’s happening to their body when they are not attending or focusing
on the present reality. We often call this day dreaming, and it's important for the
student to be able to recognize when they begin to 'drift' off into their
daydreams so they can bring themselves back to the lesson at hand. Without this
skill, information will be lost because the student is 'somewhere else' and not
really listening or attending to the speaker or activity.

It's usually obvious when a student is off in their own world or day dreaming.
They will not be looking at their book or the teacher, their reactions will not
match that of what would be expected, and they will not comprehend what is
being said or read. Just about every parent has had moments when they are
talking to their child and they recognize that their child's eyes have an empty or
Dealing with Triggers
Focus Coaching guides the student in taking an active role in learning. We
teach the student to recognize when he is losing his focus, what is causing
him to loose focus, and how to consciously regain control of his focus and
attention.

spacey look to them.  They can tell that their child is not focused on them even if the child appears
to be looking straight at them.

For dyslexic thinkers 'triggers' are frequently the cause of much of their focus and attention
challenges. Although we often blame the person for not paying attention or staying focused, an
unconscious 'trigger' is causing the issue.

A 'trigger' is often a symbol (a letter, number, math symbol, or word) that a picture-thinker cannot
use effectively. For some people a 'trigger' can create an emotional response that prevents the
learner from performing well. The 'trigger' causes them to go into a mental state of confusion, even if
they aren't aware it's happening.

During Focus Coaching the student learns to identify what their own 'triggers' are and how to deal
with them. Through this method, they are able to become more conscious as to where their mind is
(are they on task or are they daydreaming), and use techniques to bring themselves back into focus.
Practice will bring automaticity so that the loss of focus and attention decreases dramatically.
